Sophia Mathewson

Hi! My name is Sophie Mathewson and I started Community Spotlight in my 11th grade year of high school. I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether through creative films, listening and playing music, and documentaries.

Through Community Spotlight, I wanted to use my love for video and creativity to benefit my community. In today’s world, we are often bombarded with very real issues such as those we see on the news or social media and it is easy to fall into traps of discouragement. In the beginning of high school, I thought to myself “There are so many problems needing to be solved. Is anyone doing anything to help?” This initially negative thought inspired me to look more closely around my community and search for ways to get involved. I was quickly able to realize that there were people, in fact, who were striving to help solve important issues in our community.

I hope that Community Spotlight allows for others to observe the problems that impact our society, see others who are making a positive difference, and then learn how they can act themselves. My goal is that the leaders who are highlighted will not only have a video to promote their organization, but also inspire others to become leaders themselves in their own ways. Change is possible when we work together.
